Lilac leaf infestation

Lilacs (Syringa) are bright deciduous shrubs and small trees that grow on alkaline soils. These classic shrubs adorn the landscape with abundant clusters of tubular fragrant white, pink, lilac and purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The oval, medium-green leaves contrast with the bright colors of the plant's flowers. Fungal diseases and some insects can seriously damage lilac leaves.

Powdery mildew

Powdery mildew is an easily recognizable fungal disease. The first visible signs include a white powdery coating of spores and filamentous, branching growths on the surface of the leaves. Favorable conditions for powdery mildew infection include moderate temperatures up to 27 degrees, high humidity at night for fungal growth, and low humidity during the day for spore dispersal. The disease can lead to deformed and dwarfed leaves, which eventually die off and fall off. Keeping plants in full sun can help prevent powdery mildew infection. Horticultural oils, synthetic fungicides, Bacillus subtilis, and sulfur preparations can help eliminate and prevent new cases of this disease.

Leaf spotting

Leaf spotting is a fungal disease that causes raised areas with small yellow or brownish spots to appear on the leaves. The spots turn into big spots. Although leaf spotting usually does not lead to serious long-term damage, it does look ugly, especially if the spots cover the entire leaf. The pathogens that cause leaf spotting develop in a humid environment. Preventive strategies include avoiding top watering. When you notice leaf spotting, remove the infected leaves so that the disease does not spread to other plants. Fungicides have a limited effect on leaf spotting.

Spotting

Spotting is a fungal disease that causes discoloration and deformation of foliage. Bacterial damage to lilacs leads to the appearance of brown-black leaves and damage to other parts of the plant, including flowers, buds and shoots. Botrytis causes mottling of the leaves with gray masses. Cultural control is the best way to control diseases, including avoiding overhead watering and ensuring plants have good air circulation. The new growth can be protected from damage by copper-based fungicides.

Lilac Leaf Beetle

Leaf beetles are tiny pests that infect lilac leaves. The larvae of these pests create discolored marks, spots and holes on the leaves. The leaves discolor and die off. Serious infection can slow down plant growth. As soon as you notice signs of a leaf mite, collect the infected leaves and remove all fallen debris around the plants. Spraying plants with insecticidal soap will help deter leaf beetles.
